Steel railing price per metre: how we calculate it.
A galvanised and powder-coated steel railing costs 90 to 175 € per metre with us, supply only, ex VAT, depending on the design. Here is where those numbers come from: the same formula we use in our quotes, applied to five common railings.

The price follows the weight
People talk about price per metre, but we price per kilo of steel. A metre of railing weighs 8 to 32 kg depending on the sections, and almost everything follows from that: cutting, bending, welding and grinding grow with weight. Each bar is cut and welded separately; at 110 mm centres that is nine bars per metre and about 36 € per metre for the bars alone. The finish is also paid by the kilo: galvanising, powder coating, or both.
Five railings, priced
Height 1.00 m, posts every 1.20 m, bars at 110 mm centres (gap under 110 mm, as NF P01-012 requires in France). Price per metre, ex VAT, supply only, for a 200 m project. For 10 m, add about 10%.
| Railing | kg/m | Powder-coated | Galvanised | Galvanised + coated |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Light: flat 40×8 posts and handrail, Ø12 round bars | 12,4 | 77 € | 75 € | 88 € |
| 2. Standard: 40×40×2 tube posts, 40×8 top and bottom rails, Ø12 bars | 14,1 | 84 € | 81 € | 96 € |
| 3. Heavy: 50×50×3 posts, 50×10 rails, Ø12 bars | 18,6 | 100 € | 96 € | 116 € |
| 4. Flat 40×8 bars, 50×50×3 posts, 50×10 rails | 31,6 | 146 € | 141 € | 175 € |
| 5. Perforated sheet, 50×50×3 posts, 50×10 handrail | 7,6 | 91 € | 87 € | 113 € |
Where the money goes
On the standard railing, galvanised and coated (96 €/m): 68 € fabrication and 28 € finish. On the flat-bar railing (175 €/m): 112 € and 63 €. Roughly two thirds workshop, one third finish.
What changes the price
- Sections. 50×10 rails instead of 40×8 make everything heavier. The lighter section is often enough; the calculation decides.
- Finish. Galvanised only or powder-coated only: about the same price. Both together add 11 to 34 €/m. Outdoors it is worth it.
- Quantity. −5% above 20 m, −10% above 100 m.
- Fixing. Side-fixed to the slab edge instead of top-fixed: about +3%.
- Infill. 40×8 flat bars instead of Ø12 round bars: about 1.5 times the price, because there is 1.7 times more steel.
What is not in the price
Installation: in France it is done by our partner installers and priced on request. Transport: priced in the quote for each site. Specific engineering and tests if the package requires them; in Méru we did the survey, shop drawings and the NF P01-013 test.

How much does a steel railing cost per metre?
With us, 90 to 175 € per metre ex VAT, supply only, for a galvanised and powder-coated railing, depending on the design; from about 75 € with a single finish. Installation and transport extra.
Why do flat bars cost more?
Because there is more steel: 31.6 kg/m against 18.6 kg/m for the same frame with Ø12 round bars. Fabrication and finish follow the weight.
Does the price drop with quantity?
Yes: −5% above 20 m and −10% above 100 m. Very small pieces cost a little more per metre.
