EN 1090-2 EXC2: what buyers should require.
For load-bearing steel structures and works, CE marking to EN 1090 is mandatory on the European market. Here is how to check that a supplier is genuinely compliant.

Two parts, two roles
EN 1090-1 defines conformity assessment and CE marking of structural steel and aluminium components. EN 1090-2 sets the technical execution requirements: materials, cutting, welding, assembly, tolerances, corrosion protection.
The manufacturer must hold a factory production control (FPC) certificate issued by a notified body and issue a declaration of performance (DoP) for each supply.
Execution classes EXC1 to EXC4
The execution class rises with the consequences of failure and the loading of the structure. Most ordinary buildings, walkways, platforms and mezzanines fall under EXC2. EXC3 and EXC4 cover more sensitive or heavily loaded structures.
The design office or architect sets the class. A workshop certified to EXC2 can execute EXC1 and EXC2, not EXC3.
The checklist to ask the supplier for
Five documents are enough to filter out false claims:
- A valid FPC certificate, stating the execution class covered and the notified body.
- The declaration of performance and CE marking for the supply.
- The welding quality system (EN ISO 3834) and welder qualifications (EN ISO 9606-1).
- Material traceability: 3.1 certificates to EN 10204 for structural steel.
- The inspection plan and the final manufacturing dossier.
The case of railings
A railing is not always a structural component in the sense of EN 1090. Depending on the project, it is required under EN 1090, under the applicable product standard or under the trade package specification. Ask the project lead at tender stage, not at handover.
BarDI Group is certified to EN 1090-2 up to EXC2 and to ISO 9001:2015. Attach your specification to your request: we confirm the class and the documents supplied.
Frequently asked questions.
Is EXC2 enough for an ordinary building?
In most cases yes, but the design office must set the execution class in the contract documents.
What is the difference between EN 1090-1 and EN 1090-2?
Part 1 covers conformity assessment and CE marking, part 2 the technical execution requirements.
How do I check a certificate is valid?
Ask for the certificate and check the notified body name, the validity date and the execution class covered.
